The annual average temperature is about 10 degrees, the lowest temperature in winter is around zero, and the average summer temperature is about 20 degrees. The annual precipitation is about 1100-1200 mm.
The name "Nanaimo" comes from the Salish language of the Native Americans, meaning "the place of the gathering." The city is known as the harbour city by Prince Charles and Princess Diana for its natural deep-water port.
