Nanaimo is located on the east coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. It is the second largest city on Vancouver Island.

With 2016 statistics, Nanaimo has a permanent population of approximately 100,000. Nanaimo has a mild climate and an excellent living environment. The City of Nanaimo has grown continuously since 2001. According to the latest census, Nanaimo is the fifth fastest growing mid size urban centre in BC. The City’s 2006 population was 78,692, an increase of 5,697 net new citizens since the latest census. This represents a 7.8% increase in population since 2001, an average annual growth rate of 1.56%. Nanaimo’s population for 2011 is estimated at 87,464 based on BC Statistics. This represents a projected annual growth rate of 1.7%. The City of Nanaimo is the most populated municipality outside of Greater Victoria on Vancouver Island. Based on future population projections, strong growth is expected to continue in the Nanaimo area.

Nanaimo is located on the east side of Vancouver Island, which is off the southwest coast of British Columbia. It is the second largest urban centre on Vancouver Island. The Indigenous peoples of the area that is now known as Nanaimo are the Snuneymuxw. An anglicised spelling and pronunciation of that word gave the city its current name. The first Europeans to find Nanaimo Bay were those of the 1791 Spanish voyage of Juan Carrasco, under the command of Francisco de Eliza. They gave it the name Bocas de Winthuysen. Nanaimo began as a trading post in the early 19th century. In 1849, the Snuneymuxw chief Ki-et-sa-kun ("Coal Tyee") informed the Hudson's Bay Company of coal in the area. Exploration proved there was plenty of it in the area and Nanaimo became chiefly known for the export of coal. In 1853 the company built the Nanaimo Bastion, which has been preserved and is a popular tourist destination in the downtown area.
From the end of the 19th century to the early 20th century, Nanaimo developed rapidly as an important source of coal. The rise of the mining industry and the road construction industry attracted a large number of Chinese people to the city at that time, making Nanaimo the second largest Chinese gathering place in British Columbia, and the Chinese people established a China Town. The revolutionary pioneer Sun Yat-sen visited here and raised money for the Revolution of 1911. Nanaimo has preserved many landmark buildings with Chinese characteristics, such as China Steps, Nanaimo's Third Chinatown and Chinese Memorial Gardens Park.
